When purchasing a home or condominium, legal
assistance is usually needed in connection with
the closing of the transaction or the resolution
of any legal issues relating to the property.
Similarly, if you are renting a property, depending
on the complexity of your lease or if issues surface
relating to your rental, you may need to find
competent legal help to assist you. There are
a number of law firms and lawyers throughout Canada
that specialize in real estate matters. If you
retain a lawyer or law firm in Canada, be sure
you have an agreement as to the specific services
that will be provided as well as the cost.
The legal profession in Canada is governed by
the laws, rules and regulations of the law society
of which a lawyer is a member. There are 14 law
societies in Canada, one for each of the 10 provinces
and one for each of the 3 territories. The province
of Québec has 2 law societies, thereby
respecting the civil law tradition from France
that governs the province. The other Canadian
provinces and territories are governed by the
common law tradition from England.
