Named after Queen Victoria's fourth daughter,
Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the province
of Alberta became a Canadian province in
1905.
A growing industrial and agricultural center,
Alberta is the most balanced economy in
the country. The petroleum and crude oil
industries are bringing windfalls for the
province. The income earned by a household
in Alberta is greater than any other province
in Canada.
Alberta's capital, Edmonton, is one of the
progressive education hubs in the country.
The city of Calgary is the third largest
city in Canada by population. In a short
time span, Alberta has become a recognized
commercial zone where ranching, distribution
and transportation sectors are the biggest
service providers.
For lesser mortals, Alberta is a province
of adventure sports. Known for its rocky
terrains, ideal geography and climate for
winter sports such as skiing, Rocky Mountain
vistas and array of lakes and other water
bodies, the province has become an important
ground for mountaineering and winter and
other sports. In fact, Alberta has hosted
both the Winter Olympic Games (Calgary)
and the Commonwealth Games (Edmonton), given
its sports-related infrastructure.
