The largest province in Canada in terms
of area, Quebec is situated on the banks
of the St. Lawrence River. One of the oldest
Canadian provinces, Quebec is also the second
most populated region of the country.
Surrounded by Ontario and some parts of
the U.S., Quebec was initially a part of
New France. Hence, the province has been
heavily influenced by French culture. In
fact, a majority of the population here
is French Canadian and French is the official
language.
Despite being spread over a huge area, 90
percent of Quebec is within the Canadian
Shield. The valley around the St. Lawrence River is fertile and facilitates agricultural activities.
Agriculture is a significant contributor
to Quebec's economy. Quebec is the largest
producer of maple syrup in the world. Dairy
products, fruits, vegetables and livestock
are other important revenue generators.
The abundance of natural resources has also
promoted the hydroelectricity and paper
industries in the region.
